The Unicorn is currently one of the most popular motifs in pop culture. It is a common symbol that is identified with especially by little girls, who proudly display the creature’s image on their clothes, backpacks, or pencil cases. When asked why they love them so much, they usually answer, „Because they are magical.” So what makes Unicorns so unique?
Well, this mythical and fantastic creature, although extremely popular, is paradoxically very difficult to meet. It avoids people for fear of its life and is very timid. Some people hunt for its valuable horn, which supposedly has healing properties. However, there is a way to tame a unicorn. In order to be able to gain its trust and befriend it, a person, ultimately female, should have a pure heart. Then such a unicorn tends to be submissive, which is manifested, among other things, by suddenly falling asleep on the lap of such a being with pure intentions.
Not every little fan of these unique creatures knows that the Unicorn in Christianity symbolizes Jesus Christ himself, who healed all people with his hands or words, just as the unicorn with its horn, which is a panacea for all poisons and diseases. The hunt for the unicorn was also interpreted as the saving death of Christ, who with his innocence, kindness and purity, as well as wisdom, resembled this mythical creature, sacrificing his own life for the good of others. In the Middle Ages, a popular motif of Christian art was the image of the Virgin with a Unicorn on her lap as a symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
It is worth noting that the unicorn is also a popular motif in heraldry. We can find it, among others, in the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Scotland or Great Britain.
It is believed that the lifespan of a unicorn is over 1,000 years. However, the animal remains young almost to the end.
